RTYC take 2nd place

A very Corinthian Thames team comprising two “Grand Masters” (Jamie Clark & Peter Schroeder), three “Masters” (William Edwards, Nigel Baker & Gregor Logan), a rising star from the Club academy (Sam Jenkins), and two Guest sailors from two of our reciprocal clubs (Ali Copeland from the Royal Vancouver & David Walters from the Royal London) took part in this invitational event.

We were assured that the Spanish team very new to team racing, but no one told us that they could sail J80s very fast; their team included a J80 world champion!

Practice racing on the Sunday was abandoned as the Spanish team were not due to arrive until late in the day and others were involved in other events

Monday morning dawned sunny and almost windless and the teams were towed out to  the north of Bramble bank were the Race Committee set a box course that used well what wind there was and kept everyone out of the worst of the tide.

Three Round Robins were completed on this first day. We managed to beat Santander once and the Squadron twice, with the score at the end of day one Santander 5; Thames 3; The Squadron 1. It was clear that we were going to have to raise our game considerably if we were to top the list.

Tuesday gave us a good breeze of 15 to 18 knots and the course was set in Osborne bay. Despite some excellent starts, good team racing and improved boat speeds Santander held off our challenge for the first three races. However, both boats, urged on by their helms (William Edwards & Gregor Logan) continued to improve both their boat speed and team racing prowess to take races 4 & 5.

After winning our first four races against a fast improving Squadron team we lost our fifth race against them following one of our few less than perfect starts.

The final score was: Santander 12; Royal Thames 9; Royal Yacht Squadron 3.

We enjoyed some very exciting racing and agreed that on this occasion the Spanish team were worthy winners and a great team.

As always, the Squadron’s hospitality was superb with a friendly reception and supper on the Sunday night and an excellent prize giving dinner on the Tuesday night.

Finally we have an invite to race in Santander; we should try to take it up!
