RTYC at the inaugural YCCS team racing challenge

Following on from RTYC's successful first day, Day 2 had light and variable winds, and RTYC Team started the second round robin with a win and a loss, before the race committee gave up the challenge and abandoned for the day.  A splendid dinner was hosted by YCCS with band and dancing.
Day 3, however, had strong westerlies, 18-24 knots, and boat control was the issue of the day.  Many of the races were extremely close and RTYC finished the second round robin with 4 losses and 3 wins.  One of the losses followed the parting of a tiller extension during a close gybing situation but unfortunately no redress was granted for this and the race was lost.  This became the pivotal moment, since following some other resails due to gear failure, no few than five teams finished the two round robins on 9 wins and 5 losses, making for a five way tie for first place!

With the tie break rules applied, the event was won by Italy’s C.C. Aniene skippered by Cristiana Monina and Luca Tubaro. The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda team, skippered by Filippo Maria Molinari, took second place ahead of Team Atalanti/Yacht Club Greece, skippered by Stratis Andreadis and Iason Spanomanolis. RTYC finished in fourth place.
The event was a spectacular success, with exciting and close racing in the Bavaria supplied yachts and the YCCS commodore Riccardo Bonadeo and his team can be rightly proud of having put on a first class event on this inaugural occasion.
