Masters in Hamburg 2K

The Eurosaf 2k Team Racing Championship was held on the Alster Lake in the centre of Hamburg from 14-16 November.  Royal Thames Y C was represented by a Masters team with skippers Marshall King and William Edwards, and crews Tim Peters, Sarah Allan, Alison Kinsey and Ian Dobson .  There were eight teams entered and the racing was fast and furious.  The Thames team distinguished themselves on day one, winning all but 2 of their seven races to lie 2nd overnight. On day two the second round robin was less successful with only one win and 4 losses dropping them back to 4th at the end of the day.  This was unconnected to the team's visit to the infamous Hamburg Reeperbahn the previous evening.   On the third day, the event format concluded with a sort of knock out league where the lower placed teams could still move up the table if they won enough matches.  The Thames team won their first match with some smart manoeuvres but unfortunately lost to the Serpentine team in the second match.  Serpentine (captained by RTYC member Henry Arnold) then went on to finish second overall, whilst Thames dropped one place to 5th.  Spinnaker- helmed by RTYC members Sam Littlejohn and Tom Hebbert went on to win the event. The Hamburg Yacht Club put on a fantastic event with Europecar generously sponsoring a dinner for all sailors and organisers on Saturday and fantastic breakfast for all sailors every morning.  Accommodation was within minutes of the club and just a short taxi ride from the centre of Hamburg.  Altogether a well run and successful event.
