Belvidere Cup Report

Belvidere Cup Public Schools Match Racing

The Belvidere Cup, which is invitation match racing open to ex public school teams, was re-run on 8/9th November because the inaugural event in February had to be postponed due to high winds.

7 teams made up of Rugby, Winchester, Radley, Charterhouse, Uppingham, Ardingly and also a RTYC Academy team arrived on Saturday morning at Queen Mary to a blustery grey morning. The PRO, Alexis Dogilewski, took the wise decision to reef the mainsails and do without spinnakers. Almost every team had a member of RTYC aboard.

A total of 15 races were run before conditions became too testing and racing was called off for the day with Winchester helmed by Ali Hall, a RTYC member, emerged in the lead with no losses followed closely by Charterhouse and Uppingham.

A most enjoyable dinner was had at 60 Knightsbridge with the very fine Belvidere Cup, gold overlaid on solid silver, was displayed.

The morning of Sunday dawned bright and clear and, despite a forecast of almost zero wind, a 6-12 knot breeze developed which allowed the use of spinnakers and enabled the teams to engage in close quarter combat in the pre start. The umpires led by David Lees with a strong team that included RTYC members Vice Commodore Bernard Kinchin, George Ehlers and Bill Wyatt were kept busy making the calls as the competition intensified. The sailing conditions continued to be almost ideal throughout the day.

The Race Committee of Doug Harkham, Jenny Woods and Linda Pennington kept up a intensive pace as the team maximised the opportunity to race which was much appreciated by the competitors. The first Round Robin was completed and a full second Round Robin was also completed which was a total of 27 races.

Winchester emerged the clear winner having lost no races followed by Uppingham, helmed by RTYC member Henry Arnold and in third place was Charterhouse with RTYC James Boadle.

The second edition of the Belvidere Cup is scheduled for 28/29th March 2015.
