Race a Club J/80 in Cowes Week

Our six modified J/80s will be entered as a group for this year's Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week, beginning on Saturday11th August. They will race together within the Mixed Day-Boat class. All six are available to members to charter for the Week at a cost per boat of circa £1,500 including entry fee - the exact figure to be confirmed once Cowes Week entries have been confirmed. Three have been reserved for Royal Thames members, three for Squadron members. There will be a trophy for the best boat among the six (this will be an individual, not inter-club, trophy in order to avoid team-racing clouding the issue - we can do plenty of that outside of Cowes Week). The J/80s are also eligible for the Royal Thames Belgian Yacht Club Dish, awarded for the best performance by any boat in the Mixed Dayboat Class. Members may apply for a boat now and the allocation will be made on Wednesday 2nd May. If on that date more than three applications have been received a draw will be held at that evening's meeting of the Sailing Committee and members informed no later than Friday 4th May if they have been successful. Unsuccessful…

William Edwards and his team of Oliver Pane and Paul Shapiro were top scorers in the Masters' Random Pairs tournament sailed Sunday 11th March though both Richard Hill (with Claudia and Nick Harnack) and Bernard Kinchin (Simon Harby and Helen Hitchcock) might justifiably feel there was as much luck-of-the-draw as team racing mastery in the Ecurie Edwards victory. As with two weekends ago and the Club Match Race Cup, light airs and zephyrs were the order of the day at Queen Mary Water, and only four team races could be sailed. After four, William had sailed all his matches, being in the winning team three times but losing once. Bernard and Richard each had another match to sail - each were in opposing teams so by definition one or other would have picked up one more point. And that would have forced a first-to-score-two-points tie-break. But the light airs that had given good if less-than-hectic team racing during the morning died at lunch time and though everyone floated around for another forty minutes - and two attempts to get race five away - it became obvious that the breeze was not going to oblige. In Random Pairs, each crew sails…
