Royal Thames wins NYYC Cornerstone Cup...

News just arrived from the Colonies is that our Royal Thames team led by Rear Commodore Mike Halstead yesterday won both the New York YC's inaugural Cornerstone Cup and, with it, the George Nichols Trophy. RTYC won the Cornerstone by 1 point from NYYC with St Francis YC of San Francisco third and RYS fourth. RTYC won the Nichols by one race.

The Cornerstone Cup is a new trophy and four-way event devised by New York and closely modelled on our own Millenium Bowl. With the ever-expanding keelboat team-racing programme indulged by the senior clubs, especially on the East Coast of the US, NYYC were finding - as have we - that the programme was beginning to out-run the time and travel funds available to all but the most relaxed and well-off team racers. The new event combines traditional two-way matches between NYYC and the other three clubs. As well as the headline trophy, traditional bi-lateral contests are also settled within the framework of the four-way.

The Royal Thames team, which travelled to the States last Thursday, consisted of team captain Mike, Tim Saxton, Tony Adams, Olly Dix, Ben Saxton, Amelia Boadle, Henry Woods, Sam Maxfield and Pete Mathews. They beat a particulaly experienced NYYC team headed-up by George Hinman, Bill Tripp and Phil Lotz.

Well done indeed.
