Team Royal Thames reach The City Challenge Final

Team Royal Thames have, for the third year running, sailed into the final of The City Challenge. This annual sailing event in the heart of London is always a closely fought contest and none more so than this year.  Racing in a series of heats throughout May, June & July, five teams in each of the five heats have battled it out with the top two teams from each heat heading for the final and, having shown consistent results in every race, the club team have guaranteed their place in the final showdown.

Helmed by Gregor Logan, the team was made up from a total of thirteen club sailors including John Dallimore, Jonathan Clark, Victoria Scott, Lene Gibson, Sarah Paramore, William Edwards, Richard Hill & William Burdall.

Competition in the heat came from a variety of well-known City names including Investec, Ernest & Young & Citigroup.  The team's main sparring partner came in the shape of Investec, helmed by Mason Woodworth, who clinched the other place into the final.  As always, the wind shifts and holes made the Royal Victoria Dock a more than challenging venue to sail in with leading positions being converted to "dead flat lasts" and back again in the blink of an eye.  Nimble crew work along with smooth boat handling and rapid decision making makes for good results and the RTYC team showed that in equal amounts.

However, the final will be a different matter.  Pride is at stake here and, having been the bridesmaid on three occasions now, the RTYC team would really like to be the bride.

The final is being held on Tuesday, 2nd September at the Royal Victoria Docks. The team will be there going for a win and support on the day from club members is invaluable.  If you can, please join us in the docklands, after work (5pm onwards), and support your club sailors.  The Novotel hotel has a wonderful balcony with a great vantage point and essential liquid refreshments are in constant supply.

We hope you can join us and support the team.

Victoria Scott.
