Royal Thames Hurst Families' Picnic — 09 August '09
.
The weather Gods looked kindly upon the South of England and dealt a glorious day of sunshine. This in turn prompted a high turn out for those wishing to watch the start of the Fastnet and those wishing to spend a day in the New Forest. Thus resulting in very heavy traffic through the New Forest. Those who chose to battle the foul tide and come by boat did not have to contest with traffic; but for some, insufficient water to navigate successfully into 'Keyhaven Pool'.
Within moments the trials and tribulations of the journey were put to the back of our minds by the fantastic sights of Hurst Castle and the hive of activity surrounding both Keyhaven and Hurst Castle sailing Clubs. A very pleasant and calming ferry ride brought one to the landing stage at the Castle, and it was fantastic to be greeted by the Club pennants guiding one to the drawbridge and entrance to the Royal Thames enclosure at Hurst Castle. For those who have not been to Hurst Castle the Eastern sector, which was the latter edition (19th Century) comprises of a lawned area approximately the size of a rugby field; within twenty foot walls, with all sorts of nooks and crannies for children to play in. There are a series of steps leading to the battlements providing unparalleled views of the western approaches and eastern solent.
The relaxed theme continued with a constant flow of arrivals, and suitable pitches sought for picnics. The Traceys had brought a very impressive array of kite building materials, comprising of sheets of spinnaker cloth, poles, duct tape, scissors and flying string. This concentrated minds and kept the parents busy devising their potential flying machines, while others were preparing picnics. Wacky the Wizzard who was in situ for the picnic, kept the children and families in awe of his candid tricks during lunch and kite building. Prior to a spectacular forty five minute show for the children. Annabel Hunt orchestrated the days racing with numerous running, jumping, egg and spoon and Father's races. Meanwhile parents and grandparents took the opportunity to watch the yachts competing in the Fastnet exiting the Solent through Hurst Narrows, all of who were getting into the swing of what was to become a four hundred and eighty mile beat to Fastent Rock. In hindsight I suspect that some of the competitors that I had previously spoken to rather wished they were enjoying a glass of rose or sampling the culinary delights that Kevin was cooking on our BBQ, instead of the prospect of twenty plus hours a day for the next three days sitting on the rail!
The CSO had gone to great lengths to organise a treasure hunt and produce a Castle Quiz, unfortunately however due to other distractions and the enjoyable relaxed nature of the day, all of the pre planned events did not take place. The finale of the activities was the Kumberland Kite Flying Competition and the parents and children's efforts were duly rewarded by numerous soaring kites. The day rounded up with the presentation of some superb medals, all thanks to PIK for making these. Traditional sweets were provided by Humbug of Quay Street, Lymington and were handed out to the Children as they left.
The Hurst Castle Ferry, together with members RIBs then ferried some happy people back to their various boats and means of transport. The strategy for exiting the New Forest was to avoid Lyndhurst at all costs, and go via Beaulieu. My feeling was that it was a very enjoyable day, and for those that have not ventured to the RTYC family picnic; all can be assured of either a suitably relaxing remedy for Cowes Week and re familiarization with the family, and a great opportunity to meet other members in an informal setting.
