Wine Tasting - 'Italy from Top to Toe' — 16 July '12

Italy now produces nearly a quarter of all wines consumed in the world. The UK is the third largest market for Italian wines after the USA and Germany, and with growth of 12% in exports in the last year, the Italian wine growers are certainly doing their bit for the Italian economy. 

There are many reasons for this including simply better wine making, a wider appreciation of Italy's different grape types, and even a scheme in Sicily where land confiscated from the Mafia is being turned into new vineyards.

Our next wine tasting is designed to show you around some of what Italy is now producing - from top to toe. We will start with some Prosecco - near the top, and then wind our way through Piedmont, Tuscany, the Marches, Umbria, Puglia and then beyond the toe to Sicily - although not necessarily in that order! Two of the wines will be an Italian take on classic grapes while the rest will all feature some of Italy's unique grape types.

The tasting starts at 6.45pm and will be conducted by Jacquie Kay from Berkmann Wines who already supply us with two Italian wines. Afterwards, we hope that you will join us in the Coffee Room for dinner.

Our last tasting of Spanish wines was quite a revelation for some, and we subsequently added three of the wines tasted to the Club's Wine List. Do come and enjoy some of the different wines from Italy, and maybe we will find some more winners.
