George Nichols Team Racing
RTYC V’s NYYC
Royal Victoria Docks 13th-14th September 2008
RTYC will be hosting New York Yacht Club at the Royal Victoria Docks on the 13th-14th September racing in Beneteau First Class 8’s.
The George Nichols is raced for every three years and this year will be one to win again now that it is back on home waters.
In previous years, this has been a week-long affair in big boats, four-on-four, in Christchurch Bay. Times change and after detailed discussions with New York, we shall this year run the event as two-boat team racing in Berkeley Marine First Class 8s in Royal Victoria Dock. As well as vastly simplifying the organisation a particular benefit of this arrangement will be that we can entertain our visitors in the Clubhouse, rather than having to use an outside venue.
The US team will arrive in London on Thursday, and most are staying here in our Clubhouse in Knightsbridge. Our own team will be gathering that evening at Royal Victoria Docks for some practice. The New York team will transfer on Friday morning from Knightsbridge to Royal Victoria Dock to meet the boats and practice, to gain some familiarity with the venue.
On Friday evening the Club will remain open (and for the weekend) to entertain our visitors with a drinks reception in the Britannia bar. There is no formal supper in the Club that evening, to give our visitors the chance to see a bit of London and eat out in the West End.
Early breakfast service (starting at 0600) has been arranged for Saturday (and Sunday), and transport for RVD leaves Knightsbridge at 0830. The warning signal for the first race is scheduled for
1000.
Racing will take place in front of the Novotel, where we shall have our day base and where the balcony bar will be open all day.
On Saturday evening we have our Regatta Supper here in Knightsbridge - complete with Pearly King entertainer. The supper is an open event for all members, not just those participating directly in the racing, so if in London that weekend come along and join in and help us entertain our Big Apple friends with some London hospitality.
Breakfast on Sunday starts at 0600, transport at 0830, racing begins at 1000 and should be finished by lunchtime. There will be a barbecue and prize-giving on the balcony of the Novotel on Sunday afternoon.
The Provisional Race Schedule and Scorecard is here.
