J80 RTYC Team Race Series 1 — 23 January '11
Bronze/Silver level racing

A great day of random pairs team racing at Queen Mary: three to a boat and no spinnakers. The format smoothed boat-ghandling differences and put the emphasis on team racing ability while the schedule paired the teams such that no team raced with any other team more than once. Each team had nine races - always paired with someone different - in a format designed to bring the best team racing crew to the top.
After nine races in which each crew raced six times, each with a different partner, the equipages led by Rob Gosling and by Richard Hill had four wins each. A tie-breaker was needed - and happily there were two teams with only two wins each. Since success in two-boat team racing depends primarily on one's ability to help-out one's team mate the obvious thing to do was pair each high-scorer with one of the low-scorers and see who was better at keeping the team in front. Taking her cue from the title of the event Race Officer Jenny Woods randomly paired Gosling with the Carley/ Dallimore/ O'Connor equipe and Hill with Nelson, Foot & Kinchin.
The final scores are here.
