Royal Thames Autumn Excuse — 15 October '10

15 October –17 October

.

Time to visit Yarmouth again for a relaxed weekend of socialising, shooting, golfing, walking - and even some sailing!

PLEASE REMEMBER YOU MUST BOOK YOUR BERTH IN YARMOUTH INDIVIDUALLY, WE CANNOT DO THIS FOR YOU.

Itinerary

Friday 15th October.

RTYC yachts arrive during the day in Yarmouth Harbour. A navigational exercise starting on Friday about mid-day in the Central Solent area lends point to the peregrenation westwards. A course that will place emphasis on comfort and navigational ability at the expense of doing any of that rather common beating stuff. The aim will be to a) get the committee boat to Yarmouth before the first competitor arrives, that vessel having to stay at the start until the last boat leaves, and b) get everyone to Yarmouth in time for a small glass of pale dry sherry before...

Evening: Supper at On the Rocks - This has proven to be extremely popular in recent years and with a maximum capacity of about 60 it is important to book early to avoid dissapointment. We gather in the King's Head in time to move to On the Rocks for 7.30pm

Saturday 16th October.

Shooting - This part of the weekend is full

Golf - The 2010 annual Golf Match against RSolYC will be contested at Freshwater Bay GC on the morning of Saturday 16th October.

The format is 4 ball better ball team stableford. The range of handicaps of the home team runs from low single figures to high and so all members of the Thames who own or indeed have ever borrowed a set of golf clubs will be able to play against RSolYC players of similar handicaps to their own.

Many of those who attend the Excuse sail to the IoW at that temperature-challenged time of year on 4 wheels and courtesy of Wightlink or Red Funnel and so getting cold and wet on the way there is not compulsory. We have a proud history of drawing these matches but we can't afford to sit on our laurels. It is always an extremely genial event - do join us if you can.

Email Match Manager and Team Captain Clive Chalk on clive.chalk@btinternet.com to let him know your availability and handicap. So far Our Team will be:

Peter Hunter 18/Jacques Delacave 18

John Wooderson 18/ Ross Witherow 21

Clive Chalk 21/ Tony Bird 24

Richard Bundy 24/ Rupert Salmon 28

Cumberland Fleet Manoeuvres: if you are not shooting , playing golf, going for a walk or simply sitting around doing nothing the CSO will provide a Solent-based Cumberland Treasure Hunt to lend interest and purpose to the extraordinary notion of going for a sail. The tide serves admirably for a day-trip out towards the Needles and back - so expect lots of clever questions concerning sewing.  Email the CSO on sailing@royalthames.com if you are interested in participating in the Treasure Hunt.

AND FOR EVERYONE ATTENDING THE EXCUSE...

pre Prandial drinks at Kings Manor, home of Jamie Sheldon followed by dinner at the Royal Solent Yacht Club. There will be a launch service from the Harbour to King's Manor depending upon need or you can go up by dinghy - the tide serves admirably. We shall not this year, however, hire mini-buses in view of the lack of take-up last time.

Sunday - RTYC yachts depart Yarmouth bound for home ports.
