Talk at 60 Knightsbridge 'Women Who Built Warships' — 28 January '10

Thursday 28th Janaury 2010 Arrival: 6.30pm Talk Starts: 6.45pm

The general view of nineteenth century women, particularly those from middle class backgrounds, is to assume their lives were devoted to children and domestic affairs. The two women, who are the subject of this talk, challenge this view.

Active businesswomen Mrs Barnard and Mrs Ross ran large shipbuilding yards during the Napoleonic Wars and launched several warships for the Royal Navy.

This talk examines the careers of these two women and looks at the challenges women faced in a very male industry.

Dr Helen Doe is an author and lecturer in maritime history, a fellow of the University of Exeter and has published several books. She has visited the club before when she spoke on Jane Slade of Polruan.

This is a free event but please book with Annabel in the Secretariat.

Time: 6.30pm for 6.45pm
